IYL2015

International Year of Light 2015

In December 2013, The United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).  The IYL2015 recognizes the importance of raising global awareness of how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture, and health.

Light is Life
Why is light so important? Not only does light connect people all over the world, but it also plays a vital role in creating solutions for important global issues. From photosynthesis to galaxies light years away, light is everywhere. In fact, light is life.

Lighting the 21st Century
Light plays a vital role in our daily lives and is an imperative cross-cutting discipline of science in the 21st century. It has revolutionized medicine, opened up global communication via the internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society.

Lighting Design Profession
Especially in the International Year of Light, Lighting Designers demand recognition of the strategic value of their profession. They are passionate about light and lighting, they share creativity, technological research, knowledge of art and architecture, the continuing education and the dissemination of the culture of light. Today, they do have no representation in politics or trade unions. They are not identified, protected, listened to, or enhanced. IYL2015 will be a great year to get things changed on that end and finally get the recognition they’re aiming for!

Light based Technologies
A globally recognized “Year of Light” is a tremendous opportunity to ensure that international policymakers and stakeholders are made aware of the problem-solving potential of light technology. We now have a unique opportunity to raise global awareness of this.

Working at the cross section of light, optics and photonics, I am proudly supporting the IYL2015!
Come, let’s light up and Celebrate the International Year of Light together!
